Are the reviews recent? Strong reviews from 2019 and nothing since is a different picture from strong reviews from last month.
What are the cancellation terms, in writing? Before paying anything directly.
Is the same product on a platform? If so, book it there. Aggregated reviews, standardised terms and a support channel that is not the operator are worth the margin.
