Very little in Shibuya actually costs money. The Scramble Crossing is free, the Hachikō statue is free, Center-gai is free — and those are the centre of most people’s visit. What you pay for is height and experiences.

That makes planning simple: decide what you will pay for, then build the rest around it. This page is the entry point to every guide on this site.

The three things you actually book in Shibuya

1. The observation deck. SHIBUYA SKY, on the 46th floor and rooftop of Shibuya Scramble Square, is the only full-scale observation deck in the district. Entry is by timed slot, and when it sells out there is nothing left. A cheaper alternative is MAG8, the rooftop lounge on top of MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, which looks almost straight down on the Crossing.

2. Experiences. Street go-karts, a sumo show, tea ceremony, chopstick-making, an izakaya crawl. All of them run small groups, so same-day spaces are rare. Go-karts have a licence requirement you must check before booking.

3. Guided tours. Walking tours in English and other languages. Evening tours often include observation-deck entry, which can be easier than chasing a ticket yourself.

Everything else — Pokémon Center Shibuya, Nintendo TOKYO, the Disney Store, SHIBUYA109 — is free to enter. You only spend if you buy something.

Five things to know about Shibuya Sky tickets

This is the single most-asked question, so here it is up front.

  1. Sales open exactly two weeks ahead. Dates further out simply do not exist in the system. You cannot book your whole trip months in advance.
  2. The price depends on entry time, not on what you see. ¥2,700 before 15:00, ¥3,400 from 15:00 (web advance, adult). Sunset and night sit in the expensive band.
  3. The ticket desk is dearer and riskier. ¥3,000 / ¥3,700 on the day — and if adult tickets sold out online, the desk has none either.
  4. The rooftop is a no-bag zone. Bags, tripods, selfie sticks, hats, earphones and food all go into a locker on 46F. Only a phone and a pocket-sized or neck-strapped camera come up with you.
  5. Weather closes it. Strong wind, rain, snow, approaching thunderstorms or extreme heat shut the open-air rooftop with no warning. The indoor 46F gallery stays open, but that is a different experience.

Shibuya is a different city at different hours

Same streets, different experience. If you only get one pass through Shibuya, this order works.

08:00–09:30 — The commuter rush. The densest human flow you will see, and the most “Shibuya” footage. Shoot from the station walkway or a building, not from the middle of the road.

11:00–16:00 — Shopping and workshops. Karting, tea ceremony and chopstick-making all cluster here. Shibuya Sky costs ¥2,700 in this band.

60 minutes before sunset — The golden slot at Shibuya Sky. Roughly forty minutes during which the sky runs blue → orange → deep navy. Booked two weeks out or not at all.

19:00–23:00 — Neon and izakaya. Nonbei Yokocho, Miyashita Park and the back lanes off Center-gai come into their own. See Shibuya at night and the Crossing after dark.

Half a day and a full day

Half a day (4 hours) — Meet at Hachikō → look down on the Crossing from MAG8 → Center-gai and SHIBUYA109 → break at Miyashita Park → Shibuya Sky on a sunset slot.

A full day (9 hours) — Meiji Jingū at opening, when it is empty → Harajuku and Takeshita-dōri → back to Shibuya for lunch → one workshop (karting or tea ceremony) → Shibuya Sky at sunset → Nonbei Yokocho or a guided bar crawl.

Everything is walkable. Shibuya Station to Meiji Jingū is about twenty minutes on foot, or one stop on the JR Yamanote line.

What it costs

Built from published prices rather than guesswork:

  • Observation deck only: ¥2,700–3,400
  • Deck plus one experience: roughly ¥8,000–15,000
  • Deck plus a guided evening tour: roughly ¥15,000–20,000
  • Walking and looking: ¥0, food aside

Mistakes people make in Shibuya

  • Standing still in the middle of the Crossing. Hundreds of people cross on each green. Shoot from the station walkway, the Starbucks upstairs, or MAG8.
  • Looking for deck tickets the day before. With a two-week sales window, evening slots are long gone.
  • Missing the go-kart licence rule. A home-country licence alone is not enough. See go-karts in Shibuya.

Guide tips

Set an alarm for the two-week mark

Every time slot for a given date opens at 00:00 Japan time exactly 14 days before. That is 15:00 the previous day in London, 10:00 in New York, 16:00 in Paris. Sunset slots can be gone within hours.

Dress for a rooftop with no bags allowed

You cannot take a bag, backpack, tripod, selfie stick, hat or earphones onto the Shibuya Sky rooftop. Everything goes in a locker on 46F. A jacket with pockets saves you a queue.

Rain makes the Crossing better, not worse

Strong wind or rain closes the Shibuya Sky rooftop, but wet asphalt reflects the neon and umbrellas fill the frame from above. If the forecast is bad, swap the order of your day rather than cancelling.

Check your driving licence before booking a go-kart

Street karts run on public roads, so you need a Japanese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. You cannot get one in Japan. This is the single most common reason people are turned away.

How much is a Shibuya Sky ticket?
Bought online in advance: ¥2,700 for adults (12+) entering before 15:00, ¥3,400 from 15:00 onwards. At the ticket desk it is ¥3,000 and ¥3,700. Child tickets are ¥1,200 and sold only at the desk on the day; preschoolers aged 6 and under go free. Checked on the official site on 3 September 2026.
How far in advance can I book Shibuya Sky?
Exactly two weeks. Slots open at 00:00 Japan time 14 days before your entry date and do not exist before that. Sunset slots sell out first, sometimes on the same day they open.
Can I turn up without a booking?
There is a same-day ticket desk, but if adult tickets have sold out online the desk has none either. Weekday mornings are usually fine; weekend evenings are not.
What can I do in Shibuya for free?
The Scramble Crossing, the Hachikō statue, Center-gai, the rooftop lawn at Miyashita Park, Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jingū all cost nothing. So does looking down on the Crossing from the walkway above Shibuya Station.
How long do I need in Shibuya?
Three to four hours for the Crossing and shopping, half a day if you add the observation deck and one experience, a full day if you stay for the evening. Everything is within a ten-minute walk.
Shibuya or Shinjuku?
Shibuya for the view from above and youth culture; Shinjuku for the sheer density of bars and late-night food. With two or more days, do them on separate days rather than together.
