Street go-karts in Shibuya

There is one thing to settle before you book: whether your licence lets you drive on Japanese roads. Get it wrong and you are turned away on the day, usually without a refund.

Street karting is the Shibuya experience people most often fail to prepare for, and the reason is always the same: it runs on public roads, so the licence requirements are strict.

Deal with that first, then choose an operator.

The licence rule

A street kart is not a fairground ride. Legally it is a motor vehicle, and driving it on public roads requires a licence valid in Japan.

Valid

  • A Japanese driving licence
  • An International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention
  • For some countries — including Germany, France, Switzerland and Taiwan — an official Japanese translation of the home licence may be accepted instead. Conditions change, so confirm the current position

Not valid

  • Your home licence on its own
  • An IDP issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, which Japan does not recognise
  • Any privately issued document calling itself an international licence

IDPs cannot be issued inside Japan. Apply through your own licensing authority before you travel.

On the day, bring the permit, your original home licence and your passport. Most operators check all three.

Five operators compared

Several companies run karts out of Shibuya, with different routes, meeting points and language support. The figures below are what each booking page showed on 3 September 2026.

OperatorRatingReviewsBookingsDurationLanguages
Akiba Kart Shibuya4.81,70060,000+1 hEnglish
Shibuya Kart4.767320,000+EN / JA
Street Kart Shibuya4.940910,000+1 hEnglish
Street Kart Shibuya Annex4.92998,000+1 hEnglish
Monster Kart (Shibuya–Harajuku)4.72436,000+1 hEN / JA

By sheer volume, Akiba Kart — 1,700 reviews and more than 60,000 bookings. At that scale the day-to-day operation is well drilled.

By rating, the Street Kart pair — 4.9 is high for this kind of activity. Both run guided routes around Shibuya with the Scramble Crossing explicitly included.

For electric karts, Monster Kart — a Shibuya-to-Harajuku route billed as Tokyo’s only electric street kart, so less exhaust and less noise. The IDP requirement is stated in the product name itself.

For Japanese-language support, Shibuya Kart and Monster Kart are the two that offer it alongside English.

Routes differ

“Shibuya karting” covers several different itineraries.

  • Shibuya loop — central Shibuya including the Scramble Crossing
  • Shibuya to Harajuku / Omotesandō — north up Meiji-dōri
  • Shibuya to Roppongi / Tokyo Tower — longer, and correspondingly longer in duration

If crossing the Scramble is the point, pick a product whose route is described explicitly. On a one-hour plan, one or two passes through the intersection is typical.

Watch the meeting point

A product can say Shibuya and still start a ten-minute walk from the station. Actual addresses include Maruyamachō, Jinnan and Higashi — all in Shibuya City, but not next to the Crossing.

Check the location on a map after booking and work out the walking time from Shibuya Station. Slots run back to back, so late arrivals generally cannot be accommodated.

What to wear and bring

The kart has no roof and you sit close to the road, so it is a fully outdoor hour.

  • Shoes — enclosed, with a heel. Sandals may be refused
  • Winter — gloves are close to essential; the airflow is cold
  • Summer — sun protection for a full hour of direct exposure
  • Rain — most operators lend rainwear, but stocks are limited
  • Luggage — large bags may not be storable; travel light
  • Glasses and phone — secure them. Anything dropped while moving is gone

Riding considerately

Street karting in Shibuya has been the subject of local debate over noise and driving behaviour. From a participant’s point of view, a few things protect the activity’s future.

  • Stay with the guide rather than driving off alone
  • Do not film pedestrians while driving
  • Obey signals and lane markings
  • Choose products that do not run late at night

Booking timing

Groups are small — a handful to a dozen or so per slot. Weekends and public holidays fill up days ahead.

Weekday daytime slots, on the other hand, are often available the day before. If you want to see the forecast before committing, check the cancellation terms and aim for a weekday.

Fitting it into a day

At an hour long, karting slots neatly into half a day.

If someone in your group has no licence, the karting hour is a good moment for them to do shopping or the Pokémon Center.

Ratings, review counts, booking volumes, durations and languages are the figures displayed on each booking page on 3 September 2026, and they move.

The licence requirements derive from Japanese road traffic law and international conventions. Conditions can change, so check the current position with your own licensing authority and the Japanese authorities before you travel. This page is not legal advice.

Guide tips

Get your IDP before you leave home

International Driving Permits cannot be issued inside Japan. Apply through your own country's licensing authority before you travel, and make sure it is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not valid in Japan.

Bring the permit, your home licence and your passport

Most operators ask to see all three. One missing document is enough to be refused. Carry the originals, not photographs.

Check the meeting point on a map

Operators are based in different places, and some are more than a ten-minute walk from Shibuya Station. A product called a Shibuya kart tour may start in Maruyamachō, Jinnan or Higashi. Look it up after booking.

Think about the weather before you go

Karts have no roof and sit low, so it feels colder than street level. Gloves matter in winter and full rainwear matters in the wet. Most operators lend it, but stocks are limited.

Check whether the route actually crosses the Crossing

Not every product goes through the Scramble Crossing. If that is the point for you, choose one where the route is spelled out in the description.

Checked in practice

What works

  • You pass through the Scramble Crossing from a driver's seat
  • One hour, so it fits around everything else
  • English-guided options are widely available
  • Several highly rated operators to choose between
  • Costumes are provided and photograph well

What to watch out for

  • A licence or IDP is mandatory, and same-day refusals are common
  • Public roads mean weather affects you directly
  • You are riding through traffic fumes and noise
  • Some meeting points are a long walk from the station
  • Nintendo character costumes are not available

FAQ

Do I need a driving licence?
Yes. A Japanese driving licence, or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. This is a legal requirement for driving on public roads and there are no exceptions.
Where do I get an International Driving Permit?
From your own country's licensing authority, before you travel. They cannot be issued in Japan. It must be a 1949 Geneva Convention permit; permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not recognised in Japan. Check which convention your country is party to.
Can someone ride as a passenger?
No. The karts are single-seaters and everyone drives their own, so anyone without a valid licence cannot take part at all.
Can I wear a Mario costume?
No. Nintendo character costumes are not provided, for legal reasons. Operators supply their own unrelated costumes.
How long does it take?
About an hour of driving. Allow ninety minutes in total for check-in, the briefing, changing and document checks.
What happens if it rains?
Most operators run in light rain and lend rainwear. Severe weather can mean cancellation. Cancellation terms vary by operator, so check the booking page.
Which operator should I choose?
Decide on the route, the meeting point, the languages offered and the volume of reviews. This page compares the five main Shibuya operators.
Will I drive across Shibuya Crossing?
If it is in the route, yes. Not every product includes it, so read the itinerary in the description.
